I have my best mate to blame. An invite to dinner only to find out 2 days later that their 3 year old daughter had just come up in spots with chickenpox. This was followed by the assumption, that I must have had it when I was little. Of course, all children have chickenpox so whats the problem! Only that I quickly found out that 1 in 10 adults have not.

Diary of a Chickenpox Sufferer

DAYS 1 - 3

A quick phone call to my parents shielded little light, they could not remember!! I trawled the internet for any information but adult chickenpox was frustratingly very underepresented. So I made a decision, that if I was to catch chickenpox, I would write a diary and publish it on the web.

After ten days from first contact with my friends daughter, I thought I had got away with it and the whole idea started to drift from my mind. --------

It was with quick realisation that I do indeed have the first signs of chickenpox. Skin feels as if its 'crawling' scalp slightly itchy. Very strangely I am getting a strange sensation in my nose. As if I want to sneeze but cannot. This is reoccuring. It feels as if I have snorted very small amounts of snuff. (Not that I actually do that!!)

Day 1 Wednesday- It all started with what I thought was a bee sting !!!

Okay, so I wasn't feeling great. A bit off colour, perhaps the touch of the flue, bit nothing that a fit healthy 35 year old could not handle. So, still at work a few paracetamol and everything is s hunky dorey.

At around 2pm I feel a small sting on the base of my neck. It felt like a bee sting without the poison.

It was right on the collar line of my shirt. So, I took time out, looked in the mirror and could see what I firstly believed was an insect bite. It of course transpired later that this was the first ' Mother' spot errupting like a Pompei volcano

That night, slight temperature, feeling chilled, my initial reaction was that 'Flu comming - Temperature of 38.6 Celcius. Broke into a night sweat but once again a few paracetamol put things right. Told the wife about the 'Bee Sting' - no sympathy there!!

The possibility of chickenpox was still on my mind so I photographed it.

Day 2 - Thursday

Busy day at work, 'flu' symptons progressing - soldier on. Paracetamol and a positive mind set. Looking forward to the weekend. (Why are people always sick on their days off!!). The 'Pompei Crater' is a bit of an annoyance as it rubs right on the shirt collar. Getting a strange feeling across my shoulders. A mild burning sensation.

That night, very shivery, cold temperature returns, pain develops in the ribs. Bad night in bed, wife upset about keeping her awake. Very bad bed sweats, need a towel to dry off, too hot then too cold, miserable, bloddy misearable. Work next day, lots to do, paracetamol, one day left to the weekend.

Day 3- Friday -

Ha Ha, I felt on top of the world, Flue symptons going, spring back in my step. Great day at work, meet loads of people and attend several meetings with large groups (aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!) I now know of course that I am as infectious as the bluebonic plague. One sniff and thats it. If you havn't had it before as a child, its 14 days and counting. My god, I shook hands with the boss!!!!!!!

Back home non the wiser, walk in the door, say hello to nearest and dearest to be greated with 'Whats that on your forehead?'
My initial reaction was a mild panic. Had some-one written something innapropriate on it without me knowing??
A quick look in the mirror revealed patches of small spots, slightly inflamed areas. Looking like a teenager going through puberty.

What followed next was an all over body check.
Bloody hell!! more of the little suckers sprouting up.
Forearms, chest, neck. Non on my legs strangely, and other vulnerable areas gratefully free.

Friday Night 23.50 hrs

Okay, I have just finished getting this site up to date and I have also just purchased the following domain name www.adultchickenpox.co.uk to help with publishing. I have limited web design experience but thankfully have a few mates who do

I have no idea what will happen next and I am feeling both excited and nervous. Questions in my mind are - Will it itch? How bad will it be? How serious is it in adults? Shit, I really don't need this now.

I am very concerned about work colleagues I was with today. One of them is expecting in a few months time!! I will have no choice but to tell them on Monday. I am still holding out a vague hope that this may not actually be Chickenpox, but it looks highly likely.

I am going to get some sleep now as I think I am going to need all the energy I can muster over the next few days.
